About Wizard of Oz
The Wizard of Oz from 1939 with Judy Garland remains the reference point for every later version. Return to Oz from 1985 offers a darker sequel drawing on Baum’s later books, while The Wiz from 1978 retells the same story as a soul musical and Oz the Great and Powerful from 2013 works as a prequel about the Wizard himself.
Wicked from 2024 and Wicked: For Good from 2025 adapt the stage musical about Elphaba and Glinda before Dorothy arrives. They overlap with the 1939 story near the end but come from a different book continuity, so they play best after you know the original.
Good to know
Do not treat these as one timeline. The 1939 film, The Wiz, Return to Oz and the Wicked films each reset continuity in places. Watch the 1939 film first, then Return to Oz, then Oz the Great and Powerful, then the two Wicked films. Legends of Oz from 2014 is an optional animated side story for younger viewers and can be skipped without missing plot.
