About Yoshishige Yoshida
Yoshishige Yoshida built a stark political triptych after leaving Shochiku. Eros + Massacre from 1969 cuts between anarchist Sakae Osugi in the 1920s and 1960s students debating free love. Heroic Purgatory from 1970 traps a teen girl with radicals plotting revolt inside stark rooms.
Coup dEtat from 1973 closes the cycle on nationalist Ikki Kita and the 1936 revolt, shot in cold wide frames. Yoshida reuses long takes and past-present cuts, but each film tightens the trap. Wide rooms and stark cuts reward viewers who track the full triptych arc. Watch in release order to track the shift from anarchist love to sealed-room revolt to state crackdown.
Good to know
Watch in release order from 1969 through 1970 to 1973. Films stand apart, but student revolt and past-present cuts recur. Each runs over two hours with slow wide shots. Start with Eros + Massacre for the famous anarchist study, then Heroic Purgatory for the sealed room, ending with Coup dEtat for the cold finale. Long takes link them, so anarchist debates prime the later crackdown watch.
