About Callan
James Mitchell created Callan for ABC Weekend TV, later Thames Television, airing on ITV from July 8, 1967 to May 24, 1972. Edward Woodward starred with Russell Hunter as Lonely, in 44 episodes across 4 series, the first two in black and white and the last two in colour. Ten early episodes are missing from archives. The show rejected glamorous spy tropes for a bleak Section handler system and a killer who questioned orders.
Don Sharp directed the colour feature Callan in 1974 from Mitchell novel A Red File for Callan, with Woodward, Eric Porter and Russell Hunter returning. It retells the Schneider assignment from the 1967 Armchair Theatre pilot. A later TV movie, Wet Job, followed on ATV in 1981. Watch the series first, then the 1974 film as a coda.
Good to know
Release order is the intended path, with no chronological shuffle needed. The 1974 film is not a sequel to series 4 but a reworking of the pilot, so it plays best after you know Callan and Lonely from the full run. Ten black and white episodes are lost, so surviving episode guides will show gaps. That is an archive issue, not a viewing order choice.
