About Dalgliesh
Dalgliesh stars Bertie Carvel as P.D. James poet detective in 1970s England. Series one from November 2021 adapts Shroud for a Nightingale, The Black Tower and A Taste for Death across six episodes. Series two from April 2023 adds Death of an Expert Witness, A Certain Justice and The Murder Room.
Series three from December 2024 covers Death in Holy Orders, Cover Her Face and Devices and Desires. New Pictures shot each story as a closed two parter with its own guest cast around Carvel and Carlyss Peer as Kate Miskin. No fourth series was dated by September 2026, with eight more James novels still unadapted.
Good to know
Watch each two parter back to back and keep the series in order for Kate Miskin's promotion arc. Series one sets Dalgliesh as a recent widower, which explains his reserve in later cases. The 1980s Roy Marsden Dalgliesh films and 2003 Martin Shaw version are separate takes with no link to Carvel. Treat this run as open while Channel 5 and Acorn weigh more novels.
