About Family Matters
Family Matters aired from September 1989 to July 1998 for nine seasons and 215 episodes. It opens on Chicago cop Carl Winslow's household before neighbor Steve Urkel, played by Jaleel White, takes over the show from season two. The run tracks Eddie and Laura growing up, Myra's arrival, and Urkel's inventions from the transformation chamber to the jet pack.
The show moved from ABC to CBS for its final season with the Winslows intact. Creators William Bickley and Michael Warren closed it in 1998 with Laura accepting Urkel, and no revival has been ordered beyond reunion talk.
Good to know
Watch one through nine in broadcast order, since the Urkel-Laura slow burn spans the whole run by design. Season one plays as a straight family show before Urkel arrives, so push into season two where the formula locks. The season nine CBS move looks slightly different but continues the same household without resetting anyone.
