About Fargo

Fargo is a crime anthology where every season stands alone in a different year of the same grim Midwest. Season 1 from 2014 follows Malvo through Bemidji, season 2 rewinds to 1979 Sioux Falls, season 3 lands in 2010 St. Cloud, season 4 moves to 1950 Kansas City, and season 5 from 2023 follows Dot in present-day Minnesota.

The film from 1996 sits apart as the Coen original that the show riffs on without continuing. A sixth season has been discussed by Noah Hawley but FX has not ordered one, so season 5 is the current endpoint with each chapter self-contained.

Good to know

Start with season 1, then watch in any order since the anthology resets cast and year each time, though broadcast order shows how Hawley's style evolved. The 1996 film is worth watching first as tone homework but is not required. Small cross-season links reward longtimers without punishing newcomers, which is exactly why the show works as an entry-point anthology.
