About Fellow Travelers
Fellow Travelers premiered October 29, 2023 on Showtime as eight episodes from Ron Nyswaner, adapting the 2007 Thomas Mallon novel. Matt Bomer plays Hawkins Fuller, Jonathan Bailey plays Tim Laughlin, with Allison Williams as Lucy Smith, Noah J. Ricketts as Frankie Hines and Jelani Alladin as Marcus Gaines. The story spans 1952 to 1986, opening in McCarthy era Washington where State Department purges punish gay staff.
Middle years track 1960s protests, 1970s disco and Fire Island splits, then the 1980s AIDS crisis in San Francisco with caregiving and loss. Episodes aired weekly through December 17, 2023 and form one closed run with no second season. Watch episodes 1 through 8 in broadcast order, since release order matches story order and each jump builds on the marriage covers.
Good to know
Watch episodes 1 through 8 straight, since each year jump names its date on screen and later reunions depend on earlier choices about wives, jobs and lists. The novel ends at the same march but adds letters and interior detail, so the series stands as a complete adaptation rather than a setup. Treat the eight as finished, with no follow up planned, and allow time for episodes 7 and 8 which center illness, protest and remembrance.
