Release Order Recommended

The order the shows premiered in. Starting with Game of Thrones is what the prequels assume, so this is the recommended first watch.

Chronological Order

The Westeros timeline, from the Targaryen conquest through the War of the Five Kings. Aegon's Conquest would sit first once it releases.

About Game of Thrones

Three HBO series share one world at different points in its history. Game of Thrones ran eight seasons and 73 episodes from 2011 to 2019. House of the Dragon sits about 200 years earlier and covers the Targaryen civil war; season 3 aired from June 21 to August 9, 2026, and season 4, due 2028, is the planned end. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms premiered January 18, 2026 with six episodes, about a century before Game of Thrones.

Release order means starting with Game of Thrones, which this guide recommends, since both prequels were written knowing how the main story turns out. Chronological order flips that and walks forward from the Targaryens to the War of the Five Kings.

Good to know

One post covers the whole franchise because every show answers the same question: how far back do you want to go before you reach the story everyone knows. Warner Bros. confirmed a theatrical film, Game of Thrones: Aegon's Conquest, at CinemaCon in April 2026, but it has no director, cast or release date yet, so its position here is an estimate. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 is due 2027.
