About Lady in the Lake
Lady in the Lake follows Maddie Schwartz chasing a police beat in 1966 Baltimore while club worker Cleo Johnson is found dead in a fountain lake. Episode 1 stages Maddie's exit from husband Milton, her Star newsroom bid and the discoveries of Tessie Durst and Cleo. Episodes 2 and 3 pursue morgue dreams, club leads and Cleo narrating from beyond death.
Episodes 4 and 5 trace missing money, fixer Reggie Robinson, press rivalries and Maddie's strain with her sons and lover Ferdie. Episodes 6 and 7 merge Maddie's guilt fantasies with Cleo's final weeks and name the men who used her. Creator Alma Har'el adapted Laura Lippman's novel for Apple across seven July 2024 episodes. Watch 1 through 7 in order.
Good to know
Watch episodes 1 through 7 in release order, since dream intrusions, lake imagery and Cleo's posthumous narration layer onto Maddie's reporting step by step. Laura Lippman's novel frames the same murders with extra point of view chapters worth reading after. No second season was planned, so the seven episodes stand as a finished Baltimore noir with no alternate path.
