About Life on Mars
Life on Mars ran two series in 2006 and 2007 with John Simm as Sam Tyler, a 2006 detective who wakes after an accident in 1973 beside Gene Hunt. Ashes to Ashes followed in 2008 to 2010 with Keeley Hawes as Alex Drake, shot in 2008 and waking in 1981 with the same Hunt.
The two shows share one answer about where Sam and Alex are, revealed only in the Ashes finale in May 2010. That makes viewing order fixed: both Life on Mars series, then all three Ashes series. Skip the short lived US remake unless curious.
Good to know
There is no separate chronological order worth listing. Life on Mars is set in 1973 and Ashes to Ashes is set in 1981, and release order from 2006 to 2010 already follows that sequence, so release order and story order are the same list. The May 2010 finale ties both shows together, which is why Ashes must come second.
