About M*A*S*H

M*A*S*H began with Robert Altman's 1970 film about the 4077th surgeons in Korea, followed by the CBS series from September 1972 to February 1983 across 256 episodes. The show follows Hawkeye, Houlihan, Winchester and Potter through comedy turning darker each year, closing with the two-and-a-half-hour Goodbye, Farewell and Amen.

Trapper John, M.D. ran seven seasons from 1979 with Pernell Roberts as an older Trapper in San Francisco, sharing only the name with the film and series. W*A*L*T*E*R lasted one pilot in 1984. No revival has been ordered, leaving the farewell as the planned close.

Good to know

Watch the film first, then seasons one through eleven in order, since the cast turnover from Trapper to B.J. and Blake to Potter assumes sequence. Early seasons play broader before the Winchester years deepen, so push past the first year for the show's full range. Trapper John works after the series as its own hospital drama with no required placement.
