About Miss Marple
Miss Marple is Agatha Christie's sharp village sleuth from St Mary Mead, and television has taken three distinct passes at her. Margaret Rutherford played her first in four MGM films from 1961 to 1964, a comic version Christie herself never fully liked. Joan Hickson then gave the definitive straight take for the BBC from 1984 to 1992 across twelve feature length mysteries.
ITV rebooted the character as Marple from 2004 to 2013, first with Geraldine McEwan then Julia McKenzie, mixing true Marple novels with books Christie wrote for other sleuths. Start with Hickson for the faithful books, use Rutherford for light comedy, and treat ITV as a loose reimagining rather than canon.
Good to know
There is no single story order here because the three versions never connect. Hickson covers Nemesis, Sleeping Murder, At Bertram's Hotel and nine more with almost no changes. ITV adds The Body in the Library and The Moving Finger but also borrows Poirot plots, so purists should watch it last. Rutherford's four films invent their own Marple entirely. Pick one complete run before sampling the others.
