About Saved by the Bell
Saved by the Bell is the NBC Saturday morning teen sitcom that ran from August 1989 to May 1993, created by Sam Bobrick and produced by Peter Engel. Zack Morris, Kelly Kapowski, A.C. Slater, Jessie Spano, Lisa Turtle and Screech Powers go through Bayside High in Los Angeles, with Dennis Haskins as Principal Belding. It is a rewrite of Good Morning, Miss Bliss, a Disney Channel show from 1988 that used four of the same characters in an Indianapolis junior high.
The main series produced 86 episodes across four seasons. Two TV movies followed, Hawaiian Style in 1992 and Wedding in Las Vegas in 1994, plus a primetime spin-off, The College Years, that ran 19 episodes from May 1993 to February 1994. A second spin-off, The New Class, replaced the cast and ran seven seasons and 143 episodes to 2000. Peacock's 2020 revival brought back several original actors as adults for two seasons before it was cancelled in 2022.
Story order is close to release order, with one wrinkle: The College Years premiered the same day the original series ended, and Wedding in Las Vegas wraps up its cliffhanger. Miss Bliss is optional and The New Class is its own continuity, so this guide keeps both out of the main path.
Good to know
Good Morning, Miss Bliss is a different school and a different premise, and only Zack, Lisa, Screech and Belding carry over. The show was retooled into Saved by the Bell after 13 episodes, and syndication later folded the Bliss episodes into the package as a prequel. Watch it first if you want the full history, or skip it and start at season 1.
The syndicated package is longer than the original run because it splits both TV movies and the College Years episodes into separate slots, producing 126 episodes in some markets. If you are following a streaming order, check whether Hawaiian Style sits before or after season 4; it first aired in November 1992, in the middle of that season.
The New Class shares Bayside and Mr. Belding but not the characters, and it ran longer than the original. It is optional. The 2020 revival is a direct sequel to the original characters and makes more sense after Wedding in Las Vegas.
