About Step by Step
Step by Step opened September 20, 1991 on ABC about Frank Lambert and Carol Foster merging six kids after a quick wedding in Wisconsin. Seasons 1 through 5 ran 22 to 24 episodes each through 1996 as a TGIF anchor with steady family plots and vacation episodes.
Season 6 ran 24 episodes in 1997, then CBS picked it up for season 7 at 19 episodes ending June 26, 1998. The run ends without a planned finale after cancellation cut it short. No revival has filmed, though cast reunions continue at fan events yearly.
Good to know
Watch seasons 1 through 7 in air order from start to finish. The kid plots age in real time, so the later teen stories need the early sibling fights behind them. The ABC to CBS move changes nothing in story, only the slot and theme cut. Expect an abrupt stop rather than a farewell, since the last season was cut short.
