About The Royle Family

The Royle Family is the Granada sitcom for the BBC written by Caroline Aherne and Craig Cash, set almost entirely in a Manchester living room with Jim, Barbara, Denise, Dave and Antony. Series 1 aired six episodes on BBC Two from September 1998, Series 2 aired six episodes from September 1999, and Series 3 aired six episodes from October 2000, each followed by a Christmas special.

After a six year break the show returned with The Queen of Sheba in October 2006, then four more Christmas specials from 2008 to 2012 closing with Barbaras Old Ring. Ahernes death in 2016 ended the series, so the 2012 special is the finale.

Good to know

Watch everything in broadcast order with nothing skipped, since Denise and Daves wedding, Nanas decline and later family events only land in sequence. The early specials from 1999 and 2000 sit with their series, while the post 2006 specials use a more standard sitcom shape. No revival was in production at the last check, and the 2012 special closes the run.
