About The Wire
The Wire ran five seasons on HBO from June 2002 to March 2008. Each season examines Baltimore from a new angle while carrying the same characters forward. Season one follows the Barksdale drug investigation, season two moves to the docks union, season three returns to the street and City Hall, season four centers on the school system, and season five covers the newsroom.
Creator David Simon built it as a single 60-episode novel. There are no spinoffs, prequels or movies, and every season assumes you watched the one before, which makes the viewing path simple even as the cast grows large.
Good to know
Watch seasons one through five in order and do not skip season two, which many first-time viewers bounce off because it leaves the towers for the port. The dock story pays off directly in later seasons, and characters introduced there return through the finale. The series ended by design in 2008 with Simon turning down further seasons, so the finale is the actual ending with nothing dangling.
