About Top Gear
Top Gear has two distinct runs. The original magazine show aired from 1977 to 2001 with road tests and consumer advice. The 2002 revival with Clarkson, Hammond and May turned it into studio stunts, races and long specials from Botswana to Vietnam.
The revival ran 33 series to 2022 before pausing after the 2023 Flintoff crash. Polar, Middle East and Burma trips rank high among fans. Watch the original run first for context, then the revival in order, since specials and challenges build on team jokes. No new series has aired since the pause.
Good to know
There is no story order to untangle, only tone change. The original run is straight motoring TV. The revival adds scripted road trips and the Stig laps. Series 1 to 7 set the format, the middle years hold the best known specials, and the later Harris, McGuinness and Flintoff years close it. Treat the 2002 revival as the main watch and the 1977 run as background.
