True Detective is an HBO anthology where each season tells a closed case with a new cast. Season 1 from 2014 follows Rust and Marty across seventeen years in Louisiana, season 2 moves to Vinci, California, season 3 to the Ozarks, and Night Country from January 2024 takes Ennis, Alaska with Foster and Reis.
Season 5 is confirmed with Issa Lopez returning as showrunner, set around Jamaica Bay in New York and targeting 2027, with Nicolas Cage reported in talks to lead. The seasons share themes rather than plot, so each works alone once you know the anthology resets every time.
Good to know
Watch season 1 first, since it sets the tone the rest react to, then go in broadcast order or jump to whichever premise hooks you. Night Country mirrors season 1 on purpose, so that pair plays well back to back. Season 5 carries no firm date beyond the 2027 window, which is why its list entry has no year until HBO locks a premiere.
