About Ultraman
Ultraman began in 1966 with Tsuburaya Productions and has cycled through distinct eras ever since. The Showa shows share one universe of Ultra Brothers, the Heisei era rebooted with Tiga into the beloved TDG stretch, and the New Generation era from Ginga onward ties each year to the last while still resetting the lead.
Almost every entry introduces its own hero and planet-level threat, so strict continuity matters less than tone. Tiga is the classic starting point, Mebius celebrates the Showa history, and Z or Blazar are the smoothest modern doors in. Ultra Q, the black-and-white precursor, is an anthology and entirely optional unless the history interests you.
Good to know
The franchise went quiet through most of the 1980s and 1990s before Tiga revived it in 1996, which is why the gap between 80 and Tiga looks so large. Movies are celebratory team-ups that slot after their series and need no separate order. Netflix's CGI Ultraman and the 2024 Rising film are separate takes for new audiences. Omega, which began in 2025, was the current series at the last check.
