About Winning Time
Winning Time adapts Jeff Pearlman book Showtime about the 1980s Los Angeles Lakers. Season 1 aired March to May 2022 across 10 episodes, from Jerry Buss buying the team through the 1980 title with Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Season 2 aired August to September 2023 across 7 episodes, racing through 1980 to 1984 and ending on the Boston loss.
HBO cancelled the series September 17, 2023 after ratings fell from the season 1 finale. The season 2 finale added a montage of real life updates to close threads, since producers filmed an alternate close in January knowing renewal looked weak.
Good to know
Watch in broadcast order, since Buss family control, Riley rise and Magic health threads run straight through. The show compresses years in season 2, so expect a faster pace after the slow season 1 buildup. Former players disputed the portrayals, with Jerry West lawyers objecting, so treat scenes as dramatized rather than record.
