Afro Samurai (2007) is five episodes of Samuel L. Jackson-voiced stylish ultraviolence: Afro climbs the headband hierarchy toward Justice across a revenge run dripping with hip-hop aesthetics. Resurrection (2009) continues as a feature film with Afro raising a son and facing old ghosts.
Watch the series first, then the film: Resurrection assumes the original's ending and its body count. The show's RZA-scored style over substance balance is the entire appeal. Takashi Okazaki's manga origins show in every elongated silhouette. The two entries form one complete revenge duology with nothing else to track.
