About Ashita no Joe

Ashita no Joe adapts Asao Takamori's boxing manga about Joe Yabuki rising from the slums through Rikiishi's death to the world stage. Season one aired 79 episodes from 1970 to 1971 from Mushi Production, closing on the Rikiishi memorial. Season two aired 47 episodes from 1980 to 1981 from TMS, ending with the Mendoza fight and the famous final image.

Two compilation films from 1980 and 1981 retell each season in condensed form with re-recorded dialogue. The manga finished in 1973, so the anime covers the complete story with no gaps, and no sequel has been announced.

Good to know

Watch season one then season two in broadcast order, since Rikiishi's weight-cut tragedy and the Mendoza buildup assume the full history. The 1980s films work as recaps after the series rather than replacements, trimming the undercard fights heavily. Megalo Box shares the spirit as a tribute with new characters, safe as a separate watch after Joe.
