About Barefoot Gen
Barefoot Gen from July 1983 adapts Keiji Nakazawa with six year old Gen surviving the August 6 bomb with his mother. Mamoru Shinzaki directs Madhouse with stark burns and cracked streets across 83 minutes of fire. The finale finds wheat growing in ruins with hope.
Barefoot Gen 2 from June 1986 continues with Gen and orphans facing hunger and gangs in 1948 ruins. Toshio Hirata directs with the same designs and harsher winter. No third film was made, so the pair forms the set with manga ten volumes beyond.
Good to know
Watch the 1983 film before the 1986 sequel since family deaths and burns carry over directly. The second assumes you know the S1 bomb flash and brother loss from Hiroshima morning. Both run under 90 minutes with graphic war wounds throughout. Treat the pair as a closed survival arc with manga volumes beyond films.
