About Bubblegum Crisis
Bubblegum Crisis began with eight OVAs from 1987 to 1991 about the Knight Sabers fighting Genom Boomers in MegaTokyo. Crash (1991, 3 episodes) continues the Largo thread as a direct sequel. Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 aired 26 episodes from 1998 to 1999 retelling the Sabers with a new continuity, and the AD Police Files OVAs cover the force's side.
The original run stopped at eight episodes with the Largo plot half-told, while 2040 closes its own war fully. No new anime has been announced, leaving the remake as the complete telling and the OVAs as the classic one.
Good to know
Watch the eight original OVAs first, then Crash, since the Largo thread assumes the run and its cliffhanger directly. Then watch Tokyo 2040 as its own retelling rather than a sequel to the Crash cliffhanger. The AD Police Files fit after either as side cases with the force rather than required chapters for the Sabers.
