About Gunbuster
Gunbuster runs 6 episodes in 1988 as Noriko Takaya trains with Kazumi to pilot against space foes. The science lessons and time dilation build to the famous final episodes with Gainax craft. Diebuster from 2004 runs 6 episodes as Nono seeks Nonoriri 15,000 years later.
Diebuster assumes the Gunbuster ending without retelling it, so it plays as a sequel rather than a reboot. The two meet in the final episode link that only lands in order. No third Top had been dated as of September 2026, which leaves the pair as a closed duology.
Good to know
Watch Gunbuster fully before Diebuster. Diebuster spoils the 1988 ending in its setup, so it cannot be a start for new viewers. The science recaps inside Gunbuster can be trusted over fan timelines. Treat the 12 episodes as complete, since sequel talk never became a date and the reunion closes the loop.
