About Initial D
Initial D adapts Shuichi Shigeno's manga about Takumi Fujiwara racing mountain passes in his father's AE86. First Stage aired 26 episodes in 1998, Second Stage 13 in 1999, Extra Stage 2 OVAs in 2000, Third Stage film in 2001, Fourth Stage 24 episodes across 2004 to 2006, Fifth Stage 14 in 2012 to 2013, and Final Stage 4 episodes in 2014 closing Project D.
The New Initial D Legend trilogy (2014-2016) retells the early arcs in modern CG as an alternate start. MF Ghost continues the universe years later with Kanata racing, running its own anime from 2023 with a second season in 2024.
Good to know
Watch First through Final Stage in broadcast order, since the Project D roster and Takumi's technique build directly. The Eurobeat soundtrack and the CG cars date the look but never the racing logic, so push through the early stages. Save the Legend trilogy for after as a remake comparison, and treat MF Ghost as a sequel-era extra once Takumi's story closes.
