About Kanon
Kanon adapts the Key visual novel about Yuuichi returning to a snowy town with Ayu and friends. Toei produced 13 episodes from January to March 2002 in a compressed take, with the Kazahana OVA in March 2003 as a DVD bonus parallel to the finale.
Kyoto Animation remade it as 24 episodes from October 2006 to March 2007 with fuller routes and definitive direction. A Prelude teaser DVD in August 2006 is promo only. Either version works as an entry, but 2006 is the fuller take. No new anime has followed since 2007.
Good to know
The two series are alternatives rather than sequel and prequel, so there is no timeline to sort. Release order shows how the same winter story expands from 13 to 24 episodes. Watch Toei first as a short take or skip straight to Kyoto Animation for the complete routes. Both runs end closed with the snow resolving.
