About Naruto

Naruto Uzumaki wants to be Hokage, and the story runs across three anime series: Naruto, 220 episodes from 2002 to 2007; Naruto Shippuden, 500 episodes from 2007 to 2017; and Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, 293 episodes from 2017 to 2023. They aired in one straight line, so release order and story order are the same list.

The complication is filler. Toei Animation kept the anime from overtaking Masashi Kishimoto's manga by writing whole arcs of its own, and about 40 percent of both Naruto and Shippuden is filler. Boruto is lighter: only 28 of its 293 episodes are pure filler, though much of the rest is anime-original material that manga readers skip.

Good to know

There is no separate chronological order worth listing; the three series are told in sequence. Lists broadly agree on these Shippuden runs to skip: 57 to 71, 91 to 112, 144 to 151, 176 to 196, 223 to 242, 303 to 320, 347 to 361, 394 to 413 and 427 to 450. Keep 347 to 361 if you want the Kakashi Anbu arc, which many fans rate as the best filler the show produced.
