Descending Stories (2016 to 2017) adapts Haruko Kumota's rakugo epic: ex-con Yotaro apprentices to master Yakumo, and the two seasons unfold the art form's postwar tragedy through Sukeroku's doomed genius. Season 1 frames the past; Sukeroku Futatabi-hen (2017) brings the consequences home.
Watch both seasons in order; the second assumes the first's decades of backstory completely. The rakugo performances are animated with unusual care for a talk-heavy art, and the show trusts viewers to sit through full stories. The manga is complete, and the anime adapts it fully: this is a closed masterpiece, not an ongoing saga.
Good to know
The show demands patience that pays off enormously: the first episodes are slow by design, building the performance world before the tragedy. Subtitles carry rakugo wordplay as well as can be expected, with translator notes worth reading. The Yotaro framing device confuses some viewers early; it resolves by season 2. No continuation exists or is needed: the story ends where the manga ends.
