About Ranma
Ranma 1/2 adapts Rumiko Takahashi's manga about Ranma Saotome swapping gender with cold water after Jusenkyo. The original aired 18 episodes in 1989, then Nettou Hen ran 143 episodes from 1989 to 1992 with the fiancee battles. OVAs and the Big Trouble in Nekonron film (1991) plus Nihao My Concubine (1992) extend the chaos.
MAPPA's remake premiered in October 2024 with a second season in 2025, retelling the dojo arrival in modern animation. The manga finished with 38 volumes, so the remake adapts from the start rather than continuing where Nettou Hen stopped.
Good to know
New viewers should start with the 2024 remake, since it retells the arrival cleanly in current animation across its first season. Then try the original and Nettou Hen for the full fiancee run with its 1980s pacing. The OVAs and films fit after the original as side battles, safe in any order once the curse rules are known.
