About Rose of Versailles
Rose of Versailles adapts Riyoko Ikeda's manga about Oscar Francois de Jarjayes guarding Marie Antoinette toward the French Revolution. The 1979 series aired 40 episodes from TMS with Dezaki's postcard style, closing on the Bastille. The 1990 film version and side stories extend minor threads around the same court.
The Rose of Versailles film from MAPPA released January 2025 with Miyuki Sawashiro as Oscar, retelling the revolution in two hours with new songs. The manga finished decades ago, so the film works as a remake start rather than a sequel, with no follow-up dated as of 2026.
Good to know
Watch the 1979 series first for the full court rise and revolution, since the film compresses forty episodes into one sitting. Newcomers short on time can start with the 2025 film as its own telling, then try the series for the complete arc. The Eikou side stories fit after the series as extras with no required placement.
