About Slam Dunk

Shohoku High's Hanamichi Sakuragi joins the basketball team to impress a girl, then grows into the sport for real. Toei Animation's TV series ran 101 episodes from October 1993 to March 1996 and adapts Takehiko Inoue's manga up to the national tournament's opening round against Toyotama. Most of it is faithful, but scattered one-off fillers appear through the run and episodes 97 to 101 form an anime-original closing arc in which Shohoku faces a combined Shoyo and Ryonan team.

The four films from 1994 and 1995 are standalone side stories that fit between TV episodes and can be watched any time after the series. The First Slam Dunk (December 2022), written and directed by Inoue, adapts the Sannoh national-tournament finale the TV series never reached, so it goes last. To read the true ending instead, start the manga around chapter 198.

Good to know

Filler guides disagree on the exact one-off episode numbers, so the list flags the closing arc rather than each number; all agree episodes 97 to 101 are anime-original. Film runtimes in release order: 30, 45, 40 and 40 minutes.
