About Sunao Katabuchi
Sunao Katabuchi directs patient historical films about girls working through war. Princess Arete (2001) opens the features on a caged princess. Mai Mai Miracle (2009) follows 1950s kids trading fantasies from November 21, 2009 after an August Locarno premiere. In This Corner of the World (2016) follows Suzu in wartime Kure from November 12, 2016. In This Corner and Other Corners (2019) extends it to 168 minutes from December 20, 2019.
The 2019 cut replaces the 2016 cut rather than continuing it, so watch one Corner per viewing. A new feature The Mourning Children is in production at MAPPA and Contrail with no date. Watch Arete, Mai Mai, then Corner to see the research depth grow film to film.
Good to know
Release order is the only order, since no character returns. Arete plays as fable, Mai Mai as memoir and Corner as archive, so the tone darkens in sequence. Pick either Corner cut, not both in one run, since the longer adds 39 minutes. Treat the set as waiting, with Mourning Children in production but undated and the Fukufuku short outside features.
