About Armored Trooper Votoms
Armored Trooper Votoms (1983 to 1984) follows Chirico Cuvie through 52 episodes of grunt-mecha war desertion: the Uoodo, Kummen, Sunsa and Quent arcs form one of anime's great long burns. The OVAs continue his story in release order: Last Red Shoulder (1985) and Big Battle (1986) fill the past, Shining Heresy (1994) confronts the creators, and the Pailsen Files (2007) rewinds to the beginning.
Watch the TV series first, then the OVAs in release order: each assumes Chirico. Phantom Chapter (2010), Alone Again (2011) and Case Irvine (2015) close later chapters. The Red Shoulder Document is a recap to skip. The show's merciless tone never softens across three decades.
Good to know
The four TV arcs have distinct settings and reputations: Kummen's jungle war is the consensus peak. The OVAs vary from essential (Pailsen Files) to completist (Case Irvine), so the notes flag each. The 52-episode run is slow by modern standards and completely worth it. No new Votoms has been announced since 2015, so the TV run plus OVAs is the set.
