About Astro Boy
Astro Boy began with Osamu Tezuka's 1963 series of 193 episodes, the first popular TV anime, about Atom fighting for robot rights. The 1980 series ran 52 episodes in color with tighter arcs, and the 2003 series ran 50 episodes in modern animation for Astro's birth anniversary. The 2009 CGI film from Imagi retold the origin for theaters.
Pluto (2023) from Netflix adapts the Greatest Robot arc as a prestige miniseries in its own continuity. Each Astro run resets Tenma, Ochanomizu and the robot laws, so no version gates another beyond shared names.
Good to know
Start with the 2003 series for the most watchable complete telling, then the 1980 run for the classic color era. The 1963 original rewards history fans with its pioneering limits rather than smooth viewing. Pluto works after any version as its own murder-mystery take, and the 2009 film fits as a family alternate.
