About Airplane
Airplane! is the 1980 spoof where traumatized pilot Ted Striker must land a stricken airliner, built from wall to wall visual gags. Airplane II: The Sequel moves the same joke engine to a moon shuttle, with a new director and most of the cast back in different roles.
Watch in release order. The sequel replays the structure on purpose, so its riffs on the original only register if you have seen the 1980 film first. The two are loosely connected at best, with the sequel recasting and rebooting freely, so treat them as companion spoofs rather than chapters.
Good to know
The original Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker trio did not return for the sequel, which Ken Finkleman wrote and directed, and it shows: part two has its fans but lands softer. Robert Hays and Julie Hagerty anchor both films in different roles. No third film has ever been developed, so the pair stands complete.
