About Aldwych Farces
Ben Travers wrote a run of door slamming farces for the Aldwych Theatre, performed by Tom Walls, Ralph Lynn, Robertson Hare and Mary Brough. Producer Herbert Wilcox filmed them at Elstree, starting with Rookery Nook in 1930, a hit that paid for the whole series, then Plunder in 1931, A Night Like This and Thark in 1932.
The company moved to Gaumont for A Cuckoo in the Nest, Just My Luck and Turkey Time in 1933, then Dirty Work and A Cup of Kindness in 1934, closing with Marry the Girl in 1935. Each plot turns on mistaken identity in a country house or hotel, and every film stands alone, so release order is the correct viewing order.
Good to know
Two late stage farces, It Pays to Advertise and A Bit of a Test, never reached the screen with this company, so the ten films form the complete set. The same players also appear in companion comedies like On Approval and Tons of Money from 1930, which are separate stories rather than Aldwych adaptations. Solo guides for Walls, Lynn or the rest would repeat these ten titles, so one franchise guide covers them all.
