About Crazy Gang
The Crazy Gang packed the London Palladium with three double acts, Nervo and Knox, Flanagan and Allen, and Naughton and Gold, mixing slapstick, cross talk and songs. Producer Edward Black brought them to Gainsborough for O-Kay for Sound in 1937, a studio farce that simply points cameras at their stage routines. Alf's Button Afloat followed in 1938 with Alastair Sim as a genie.
The Frozen Limits sent them prospecting in 1939, and Gasbags in 1941 remains their best remembered picture, with the gang floating to Germany by barrage balloon and meeting Hitler doubles. Life Is a Circus, filmed in 1958 and released in 1960, reunited the troupe for a last outing. Release order is the only order, since none of the plots connect.
Good to know
Flanagan and Allen also made pictures without the full gang, but those belong to their duo story rather than this troupe guide, so they are left out here on purpose. Gasbags is sometimes dated 1940 in older books, yet its general release fell on February 1, 1941. The troupe played on through postwar stage seasons, but the five cinema features form a closed set.
