About Dexter's Laboratory
Dexter's Laboratory ran four seasons from 1996 to 2003, following boy genius Dexter, his sister Dee Dee and rival Mandark. Seasons 1 and 2 carry the Tartakovsky run with the Justice Friends and Dial M for Monkey shorts. Ego Trip from December 1999 was made as the TV finale, sending Dexter through time to meet his future selves against Mandark's Neurotomic Protocore.
The show was revived for seasons 3 and 4 from 2001 to 2003 with a new voice for Dexter and a revised style. Watch Ego Trip between the two runs on a first pass, since it was written as the close of the original run. The 2024 complete series DVD keeps that placement with the film beside the early seasons.
Good to know
Release order works with the film in the middle. Ego Trip premiered as the intended finale before the revival, so watching it after season 2 preserves its payoff. Seasons 3 and 4 ignore parts of it, which is normal for the show's loose continuity. The banned Rude Removal short and the 1995 What a Cartoon pilot are extras outside the main path. Most segments are eleven minutes, so season blocks move fast.
