G.I. Joe animation starts with the Sunbow run: two five part miniseries from 1983 and 1984, two full seasons, and the 1987 movie that introduces Cobra-La. The DiC series then continues the story from 1989 to 1991 with a new look and lower budget.
Watch Sunbow first in air order, then the movie, then DiC. Later revivals like Sigma 6, Resolute and Renegades are separate continuities that reboot the premise, so they work as optional follow-ups rather than chapters of one tale. The live action films sit outside animation entirely.
Good to know
The Sunbow and DiC runs form one loose continuity, while everything after 1992 restarts it: Extreme, Sigma 6, Resolute and Renegades each begin fresh. That split is why this guide groups the list by era instead of pretending 40 years of reboots form one timeline. No new animated series is currently in production.
