- 1 G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero - Sunbow Series Sunbow era: two 5-part miniseries (1983, 1984) plus 2 seasons, 95 episodes total through 1986. The classic run.
- 2 G.I. Joe: The Movie Animated film released 1987. Closes the Sunbow run and hands off to the DIC continuation.
- 3 G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero - DIC Series 44 episodes, September 1989 to January 1992. Direct continuation of Sunbow with a mostly new Canadian voice cast. Opens with the Operation: Dragonfire miniseries.
- 4 G.I. Joe: Resolute 11-part animated micro-series aired on Adult Swim in April 2009. A darker standalone take; roughly one feature-length story.
- 5 G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra First live-action film, released August 7, 2009. Starts its own continuity, separate from the cartoons.
- 6 G.I. Joe: Renegades 26 episodes, November 2010 to 2011 on The Hub. Reboot that retells the Joe versus Cobra origin. Self-contained.
- 7 G.I. Joe: Retaliation Live-action sequel to Rise of Cobra, released March 28, 2013. Continues that film's continuity.
- 8 Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins Released July 23, 2021. Snake Eyes origin story and soft reboot with a new cast. Works as a standalone watch.
About G.I. Joe
Release order is the recommended path. The Sunbow series and its 1987 animated film form one story, and the DIC series continues it directly. Later entries are reboots, so each block restarts cleanly.
Resolute is a short Adult Swim take, Renegades retells the origin on The Hub, and the three live-action films split into their own continuities. Watch them as separate blocks after the classic animation.
Good to know
The two 2009 to 2013 live-action films share continuity; Snake Eyes (2021) is an origin story and soft reboot with a new cast that works standalone. G.I. Joe: Sigma 6 (2005 to 2006) and G.I. Joe Extreme (1995) are separate continuities and optional. Paramount confirmed a new G.I. Joe film in development at CinemaCon 2026, with no date set; the Transformers crossover teased in Rise of the Beasts remains in limbo.
