About The Pirates of Dark Water
The Pirates of Dark Water (1991 to 1993) is Hanna-Barbera's lost epic: Prince Ren hunts the Thirteen Treasures of Rule across an alien ocean across 21 episodes, with Tula's ecomancy and Ioz's roguery alongside. The five-episode miniseries opens the quest; the 16-episode run continues it.
Watch the miniseries first, then the series: one continuous quest in release order. The show was cancelled with only eight treasures found, so the saga famously never ends. The world-building (acid seas, monkey-birds, the Dark Dweller) outshines the animation budget. Fans still map the missing five treasures from production notes.
Good to know
The unfinished quest is the show's legend and its wound: go in knowing the ending never comes. The miniseries and series have slightly different designs from the production gap. The 21 episodes are all there is, with no revival filmed despite the cult. The proposed continuation details come from crew interviews, not canon, so treat treasure theories as fan work.
