About Ne Zha
Ne Zha from 2019 retells the Chinese myth of the demon-child Nezha, born to mortal parents and fated to die young, who fights destiny to save his village. It earned around 5 billion yuan and became the highest grossing Chinese animated film of its time.
Ne Zha 2 opened January 29, 2025 over Lunar New Year and passed 2 billion dollars worldwide, overtaking Inside Out 2 as the highest grossing animated film ever. Both films are written and directed by Jiaozi. Watch them in order. The sequel continues directly from the first film's ending.
Good to know
Release order is story order. The two films form one continuous arc about Nezha and Ao Bing, with no flashback structure to untangle. English-speaking viewers should note both films play best in Mandarin with subtitles. The dubs exist but the vocal performances in the original carry much of the comedy.
