About Popeye
Popeye began with Fleischer theatrical shorts from 1933 about the spinach sailor defending Olive Oyl from Bluto. Famous Studios continued the shorts into the 1950s, and Hanna-Barbera's All New Popeye Hour (1978) plus Popeye and Son (1987) carried TV eras. The 1980 Altman film with Robin Williams tells its own Sweethaven origin.
The 2004 CGI special Quest for Pappy closed the animated run with the father search. Each version resets the romance triangle with no shared timeline, so the shorts, the series and the film all start clean for their audiences.
Good to know
Start with the Fleischer shorts for the classic spinach formula, then the Famous run for the extended catalog of Bluto battles. The Hanna-Barbera series work after as TV-era takes with longer stories and the Sea Hag added. The 1980 film fits anywhere as its own Sweethaven telling rather than a series chapter.
