About Smurfs
The Smurfs started with Peyo’s comics, reached film with The Smurfs and the Magic Flute in 1975, then ran nine seasons as a Hanna-Barbera series from 1981. That classic run remains the core of the franchise for most viewers.
Three separate film lines followed: Sony’s live-action films in 2011 and 2013, the animated Lost Village reboot in 2017, and Paramount’s 2025 musical reboot with Rihanna. The CGI series from 2021 runs on its own. Watch in release order and treat each film line as its own restart.
Good to know
The Smurfs have no single continuity, since each film line reboots the village from scratch. The 1981 series and the 2021 series are also separate versions. Release order keeps the three film restarts in context and is the recommended path. A fourth season of the 2021 series is confirmed with no premiere date, plus two specials in production expected around 2026.
