About Assassin's Creed
Release order is the one Ubisoft intended. Assassin's Creed II, Brotherhood and Revelations follow Ezio Auditore across three games, while Assassin's Creed III and IV: Black Flag turn out to be a Kenway family saga spanning two generations.
Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla jump more than a thousand years back to the origins of the Assassin-Templar war, and Mirage and Shadows pick up again in ninth-century Baghdad and sixteenth-century Japan. From there the release order and the timeline order stop matching each other completely.
Chronological order starts in ancient Greece and only reaches the Crusades after Ptolemaic Egypt, so use it if you would rather watch the war play out forwards.
Good to know
Play Black Flag Resynced (July 9, 2026) instead of the 2013 original if you are starting fresh; the remake continues the modern-day story started in Shadows. The Chronicles games are 2.5D spin-offs and Freedom Cry began as Black Flag DLC. Rogue opens in 1752 and overlaps Assassin's Creed III, so either works first in timeline order. Codename Hexe, the next mainline entry, has no release date.
