About Astro Bot
Astro Bot started as Rescue Mission in 2018, the best game on PlayStation VR and a showcase for what first-person perspective platforming could do. Team Asobi followed it with Astro's Playroom in 2020, the free PS5 pack-in that doubled as an interactive museum of PlayStation hardware.
Astro Bot from September 6, 2024 expands the formula into a full 80-level voyage across six galaxies, winning Game of the Year. The three games share a mascot but no plot, so play them in release order to watch the mechanics grow. Each one was built to show off its hardware, from VR to the DualSense controller.
Good to know
Release order is the natural path. Rescue Mission needs PSVR hardware, Playroom comes free with every PS5, and the 2024 game needs only the console, so access alone pushes most players in this direction anyway. Nothing carries over story-wise. Completionists should save the 2024 game's brutal bonus gauntlets for last within that entry.
