About Disgaea
Disgaea is Nippon Ichi's comedy tactics line: grid battles where numbers go delightfully absurd, with level 9999 as a starting point and damage in the billions. Hour of Darkness (2003) introduces Laharl's Netherworld, and every numbered entry follows a new overlord with returning faces as DLC or cameos.
Release order works and the mechanics stack sensibly, but each story stands alone, so start at 1 or 5. Disgaea 5 (2015) is the modern standard-bearer, Disgaea 1 Complete (2018) is the remake of the original, and Disgaea 7 (2023) is the current peak with its Jumbo power. Post-game content dwarfs every main story, which is the entire point of the series.
Good to know
Disgaea D2 (2013) is the direct sequel to the first game and the only numbered title that assumes prior knowledge: play it after 1. The spin-offs (Makai Kingdom, Prinny games, RPG mobile) sit outside the numbered line and are skippable. Disgaea 6's 3D shift and auto-battle divided fans, while 7 won most of them back. Complete editions bundle the enormous DLC, so never buy a base version if a Complete exists.
