About Fire Emblem
Fire Emblem began on Famicom in 1990 with Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light around Marth, followed by Gaiden, Mystery of the Emblem and Japan-only runs through the 1990s. The series reached the West with Blazing Blade (2003), then ran Sacred Stones, Path of Radiance, Radiant Dawn, Shadow Dragon remake and Awakening (2012), which saved the franchise from cancellation.
Fates (2015), Echoes (2017), Three Houses (2019) and Engage (2023) carried the Switch era with the monastery and the ring mechanics. No new mainline game has been dated as of 2026, but Nintendo and Intelligent Systems keep the series active with Heroes updates and remakes discussed.
Good to know
Start with Awakening, Three Houses or Engage, since all three teach tactics from zero and assume no history. Nearly every game resets the continent and cast, so playing out of order costs nothing beyond missing returning faces like Marth and Tiki. Remakes like Shadow Dragon and Echoes replace their originals as the versions to play.
