About Knights of the Old Republic
This play order follows release order for the Knights of the Old Republic games: BioWare's 2003 original, Obsidian's 2004 sequel, and the BioWare MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic from 2011. Release order matches story order, since each entry moves further forward in the Old Republic era.
New players should start with the first KOTOR, which remains the high point of the series and the setup for everything after. PC players should install the free Restored Content Mod (TSLRCM) before starting KOTOR 2, because it repairs the rushed 2004 release and returns cut story material. SWTOR is optional and set about 300 years later, so nothing in it spoils the two single-player RPGs.
Good to know
KOTOR 2 shipped unfinished after roughly a year of development, which is why the fan-made TSLRCM patch is close to mandatory on PC; it is available on Steam Workshop and Deadly Stream. SWTOR moved from BioWare to Broadsword Online Games in 2023 and still runs, with Legacy of the Sith (2022) its latest expansion. The announced KOTOR remake moved from Aspyr to Saber Interactive in 2022; Saber said in March 2026 it is still in development, and one executive floated a hopeful 2028 window that the studio stressed was not official. A separate spiritual successor, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic from Casey Hudson's Arcanaut Studios, was announced in December 2025 and is early in development.
