About Maniac Mansion
Maniac Mansion launched in 1987 from Lucasfilm Games as a SCUMM point and click about teens in Dr Fred mansion. Day of the Tentacle followed in June 1993 from LucasArts as Maniac Mansion 2, with Bernard, Hoagie and Laverne chasing Purple Tentacle through time. The original game sits inside the sequel on a computer, playable in full.
Double Fine remastered Day of the Tentacle in 2016 with redrawn art and developer commentary. A 1990 TV sitcom adapted the name for three seasons but tells a separate family story, so it stays outside the game list.
Good to know
Release order is the intended path, since Tentacle puzzles assume mansion verb logic known from the 1987 run. New players can start with the 2016 remaster for art and UI, then try the 1987 original for history. The NES port censors content, so the DOS version remains the clean reference for first timers.
